LEPINE 14 KARAT SOLID GOLD IMPORTANT POCKET WATCH AND
SERVICED
STOCK NUMBER # LePINE61000-------Mr. Jean Antoine LePine was a French
clockmaker.
to Louis XV, Louis XVI and Napoleon I. Associated with his father-in-law
between 1756 and 1769.
Technical director of Voltaire’s workshops circa 1770. Handed over his business
to his son-in-law in 1783. LePine invented the Lepine caliber movement
characterized by the abandonment of the two-disk cage, replaced by only one on
which all moving parts were maintained by independent bridges, the removal of
the fusee and its chain and the progressive introduction of the cylinder
escapement. Amongst other things, this caliber reduced the thickness of watches.
Rapidly adopted in France in particular, its design is still used in all
mechanical watches today. I can tell you that with Breguet, Frodsham and
Dent he was a VERY important watch and clock maker as he lead the path to
today's little marvels that can be worn on your wrist. This is a classic style
LePine pocket watch and it is signed in ENAMEL! which is rare. It is signed
"LePine" on the solid gold inner cuvette. You can see his name is white enamel
on this cuvette. The case is 14 karat solid gold and in nice condition. The case
is 47mm wide and the enamel dial is quite clean as you can see. The hands are
original and they are LePine made hands. The movement is a LePine bar movement
and it is spotless. There are 6 jewels to this piece and again it is serviced
beyond words can tell you. The movement is a cylinder escapement style LePine
movement and it works well. Please keep in mind Cylinder watches never kept
perfect time but this one is not bad at all and it does tick up a storm. This is
an important museum piece that I had decide to put up to the public. Definitely
this is a family heirloom to pass down and down for years and years to come.
Solid gold, fully serviced and from a top clock maker is what you may expect
from this historical piece. a chain and pouch will be added no extra
charge. To wind this pocket watch you put a key (indeed
the key is included) into the top slot on the back of the case and
when you turn the key it winds up the mainspring. Then to change the hands you
put the key into the center slot and when you turn the key it changes the hands.
Again you can't get better than this and for an important piece you may be
surprised that it is affordable!
