world war. Please read on......,
SOLD ;-)Major Alex Mackenzie
Wallace St., Woodbridge, Ontario
A wee son was born on November 1, 1885,
to Donald and Lydia Ann Mackenzie in an area of
Woodbridge known as Brownsville to folks back then. He
attended Woodbridge Public School with his brother
Donald Ross, and his sisters Anne and Florence. They did
their farm chores before and after school and talked
with each other about the Woodbridge Fair.
Two highlights from his early life are: a handshake
from Sir John A. McDonald, Canada's first Prime
Minister, and a horse and buggy ride with his father in
1890 to the parliament buildings which were still under
construction. As a young man, Alexander, known to his
friends as Lex, enlisted in the Governor-General's Body
Guards. When the war broke out in 1914, he transferred
to the Fourth Canadian Rifles and, in 1915, he went
overseas. In less than two years, he rose to the rank of
Major because of the bravery and leadership he displayed
in action at The Somme in 1916 and at the battle of Vimy
Ridge in 1917. He was severely wounded at Vimy Ridge. In
his 82nd year, he was quoted as saying, I have seen
enough suffering, but I think everybody should be ready
to defend his country.
The Woodbridge Memorial Tower, built in 1924, and the
Woodbridge Memorial Arena, built in 1951, were two
projects he felt very deeply about. His brother, Donald
Ross, died in a World War I battlefield in Europe.
Canadian children are taught in schools the importance of Remembrance Day,
November 11th.
Major MacKenzie died in 1970, having served his
country for 23 years as a member of Parliament. His time
in office was associated with four Canadian prime

ELGIN
KEY WIND "B. W. RAYMOND" EARLY SERIAL NUMBER COIN SILVER CASE AND SERVICED
STOCK NUMBER # ELGIN7222------The year this piece was produced at the Elgin
watch factories in 1871 the same year of the great Chicago fire, the Chinese
massacre and this National Elgin pocket watch so it is in great company as
history goes. The case is "Duber" signed and it is coin silver or 800% pure. The
case serial number is 159,871 and very clean. The dial is enamel and original to
this piece, as well the dial is pinned onto this movement which indeed proves
this piece is of vintage age. The hands are beautiful and in perfect condition
as there are no cracks. The crystal was taken off only for the scan so you could
get a true look at this dial. the crystal is indeed glass and perfect not a
scratch. The movement is a key wind from the back and key set from the front in
the middle of the minute hand you will see a squared off notch and the key fits
into this part and when you turn the key the hands will move. The serial number
for this Elgin is an astounding low 126,138. The jewels have all been cleaned
and oiled. Both cap jewels were removed and cleaned the old fashion way as
in all our pieces...PROPERLY! There are 15 jewels to this B. W. Raymond Elgin
pocket watch and again it runs very well and keeps decent time for a civil war
era pocket watch and truly the condition is mind blowing!
