MARKHAM LONDON UK 1774! CASE IN CASE REPOUSEE  STERLING SILVER AND WELL SERVICED INCREDIBLE   1774

STOCK NUMBER # MARKHAM40-3--------I have for sale a rare and just freshly serviced Markham chain fusee pocket watch and produced in London England in the year 1774 just before the American independence! This is a sterling silver case in case with a genuine glass "bulls eye" crystal. The repousee design on the back is crisp and well pounded. Across this outer silver hallmarked case is 54mm. And the inner sterling silver case is 43mm. The snap button to open the outer case works perfectly which is a miracle lol as a certified watchmaker they are always broken or rusted out but not here! The dial is an early baked enamel piece and in astonishing clean condition considering it was produced in 1774! The hands are solid gold and clean. This early chain driven fusee movement is signed "Markham London". Every tooth, every cog, piece of the chain , main spring, hairspring etc has been inspected under my Zeiss microscope for dents dings or wear. Then cleaned then inspected again then reassembled. The end result was a nice sounding tick of the verge paddles hitting properly. Please keep in mind this early pieces never kept good time but still amazes me they run at all. This is a key wind from the back and key set from the front in the middle of the dial when the minute hand is attached there is a square post that the key fits into and when you turn it the hands will move to where you need them to be.

# WHEELOCK1

G WHEELOCK SUTTON ENGLAND ULTRA EARLY AND RARE ESCAPEMENT STERLING CASE IN CASE    1855

STOCK NUMBER # WHEELOCK1-3--------In the 18 years I have been restoring, repairing making parts for rare pocket watches I have never encountered a piece like this and I am stumped!. This is a sterling silver cottage country non signed case and made of sterling silver. The outer case is 58mm and the inner case is 50mm across. The crystal is a bulls eye glass and mint and I will say it agian the bull's eye crystal is M>I>N>T. The enamel dial is ultra correct and clean never repaired or altered. The hands are made of wrought iron and original to this pocket watch. All hinges on this case are in perfect order. There is a watch onion paper to this piece and in short it reads ?(hard to read the fine pencil on the back) but it dates this paper to 1859. This case has no markings as it was hand made or in other terms "cottage country" and produced in Sutton England as the maker of the movement resided at the time. The movement is in superb condition as the scan shows you. I really thought when I bought this piece it was a chain fusee but when I looked at the escapement and notice no chain I had to keep my "poker face" as I couldn't believe what I had lying on the palm of my hand. This piece is signed G Wheelock, Sutton England and numbered 80. It does run rather well but keep in mind it is over 160 years of age and will never keep chronometer time ever lol! But indeed it works perfectly. This is a key wind and key set and it does come with a nice gold filled sliding chain and key and pouch. Ultra rare escapement and probably (hate saying this) once in a life time piece.

SOLD ;-)

Hi there - I was admiring your pocket watches (fusee's are fascinating) and notice this one and thought I'd drop you a note on the onion paper. I first saw 'Groningen' which is a city in the Netherlands (we live in the Netherlands at the moment). The paper is thus in Dutch. Presumably HHM Middendorp is presumably the maker (horologemaker) (guess you got that(-;) who bought and sold all sorts of different horloges (watches) - at least that's what my poor understanding of Dutch allows. Pretty cool stuff.
