SWISS MADE 1/4 HOUR CAR CLOCK REPEATER AND
FRESHLY CLEANED AND SERVICED
STOCK NUMBER # SWISS REPEATER 1000------Push the button down at the side of the
case and the bell will count down the hours and 1/4 hour minutes perfectly This
may be an Invicta Swiss made piece as it is not signed or possibly a LePhare
movement. but in any case it is Swiss and just serviced properly so no worries
at all. the case is in nice condition and it is nickel worn to Brass. The
crystal is glass and the back has no personal engravings at all. the dial is
enamel and excellent as well as the original hands. This piece is Swiss made
From the early1920's and it was used as a car clock or later on a case could
have been made for this piece and used as a desk clock. The width of this piece
is 73mm. To add more pizzazz to this piece it is an 8 day reserve power so
it can go for over a week before it needs to be wound up again. There are 15
cleaned jewels to this Swiss repeater movement and it has been adjusted with
four positions. It is signed Herald Watch Co but indeed this is only a
distributor's name and not the maker tot his Swiss gem. The hammers hit the
metal cold perfectly and a crisp "DING" can be herd indeed. A stunning piece
hardly ever up for sale but here at Darlor we have " many Rabbits" in our
hat!

The story of Arthur Pequegnat is one of triumph against the odds. Imagine a time
before electricity and digital technology. A day and age when winding a clock
was essential to keeping track of time. “Tick tock” was the sound of order. It
meant catching a train. Silence was chaos. Arthur Pequegnat knew of the
importance of timekeeping. He dared to envision a Canadian clock industry when
it seemed impossible. Then he defied the naysayers and achieved it. What remains
are his clocks: evidence of one man’s belief in his family and country. 30 years
before Arthur Pequegnat entered the scene Americans had the clock industry “in
the bag”. Between 1872 and 1886 three separate attempts by three Canadian clock
companies failed miserably. Even a protectionist tariff extended by Canadian
Minister of Finance Sir Samuel Leonard Tilley was not enough to save second
company (The Canada Clock Company) from ruin. It did however name one of its
models “Tilley” in honour of his 35% tax on the importation of foreign clocks!
The Americans had the equipment, the scale, and the knowledge, and Canadians
paid the price. When the Hamilton Clock Company launched in 1876, a prominent
trade journal interviewed the floor manager: "I presume your hands are mostly
Americans, as I do not suppose you could find Canadians skilled in this branch
of industry". The manager replied, "On the contrary, out of fifty hands employed
by us we only have two Americans". (Varkaris & Connell, 1986: 17). Canadian
pride was not enough. Despite three separate attempts to compete with the
Americans, all three companies were bankrupt by 1886.1874. In the throws of a
freak April snowstorm the Pequegnat family arrived from Switzerland to Berlin
Ontario. According to The Pequegnat Story
(Varkaris, 1982:9) never before, or since, had such a large family arrived in
Canada at once. Fourteen in total. Two-by-two, Arthur and his father lead the
pack “with a shotgun over each of their shoulders” should Indians be encountered
(Varkaris, 1982:9). This scene foreshadows Arthur’s leadership in establishing
his family, and eventually an entire industry, on Canadian soil.1881. It wasn’t
long before the eight Pequegnat brothers established themselves. They learned
the language and disbanded with their Swiss skillsets to open jewellery stores
across South-western Ontario. They used their collective buying power as a sort
of family conglomerate. Within seven short years they opened 10 jewellery
stores. Arthur, the eldest, was the ringleader. Arthur joined forces with his
brother Paul to open stores in “Busy Berlin”.

BLAKE LONDON CASE IN CASE 1806 STERLING SILVER "REMARKABLE !!!!!"
STOCK NUMBER # BLAKE1000-4------Still to this day it amazes me that these
historical mechanical wonders were made with no electricity, computers or modern
equipment and not like the cars built today this piece still goes and goes and
goes. I have for sale a master watchmaker's piece as it is indeed signed W(
William Blake) Mr. Blake resided in London England in the late 1700's to his
death in 1845. This is a sterling silver case in case chain fusee driven pocket
watch and I can tell you the movement is in awesome working order. This is a
verge escapement pocket watch and again it has been properly cleaned and
serviced with the utmost T.L.C. The case complete across is 60mm. With the stem
and the bow down it is 70mm. The height of this "beast" with the glass
"bulls-eye crystal is a whopping 28mm. The dial is enamel and it is in amazing
condition for it's age and it is original and for this piece. The hands are
solid 18 karat gold and they do belong to this Blake movement. The two cases are
well hallmarked and sterling sliver. The watch paper is genuine and shows that
it was serviced in North St Sudbury England years and years ago. I can only assume
that this watch traveled to Sudbury as this town was part of our great nations
railway systems to the west and it was a large depot for the trains to stop ,
refuel and acquire cargo. This piece is a real McCoy so make no mistakes, this
is a fantastic sterling silver chain fusee verge pocket watch and it does run
rather well. On a final note, these pieces were never great time keepers but
they were in the acceptable range.
ON HOLD ;-) |
